MY HOMETOWN, MÉRIDA

As an introduction, I would like to comment the type of tourist most demanded in the world: sun and beach, and, thanks the location of Spain (surrounded by water), it involves the second most visited destination.

Extremadura counts on several natural resources, a lot of tourists come here to practice all type of natural sports, such as, birdwatching or trekking. Extremadura counts on not only natural, but also, cultural resources, Mérida is a great place to visit because it has an important past. It is the capital of Extremadura, and in 1993 it was declared World Heritage City by UNESCO.

From the natural point of view, Mérida has several beautiful parks, one of them is "7 sillas", this is, "7 chairs". Another natural resource is the famous Guadiana´s River, where you can practice fishing or canoeing.

We count on several important cultural resources: Roman buildings, for example, Theatre, Amphitheatre, Aqueduct, bridges, and so on. And the Roman Art National Museum.

We receive many tourists for different reasons:
1. Improvements in technologies: With the INTERNET the tourist can obtein information, book rooms...The new machineries with which new free and high ways was created.

2. Transports: in Mérida there are two stations: coach and train. So, the arrival is easier.

3. Weather: it is good throughout the year, but the high season is August.

4. Infraestructures: 50 years ago, we had poor infraestructures, but, nowadays wecount on different four-star hotels, as, Velada or Trip Medea. Zeus is the oldest hotel, it was built in 1970.

5. Promotional tools: we promote Mérida with a lot of tools: leaflets, brochures, souvenirs (in shops of Mérida)... so, we attract more tourists.

The type of tourist that we receive is very different, they are from children to old people; with low and high purchasing power.

They come from over the world, nationaly, from Andalusia, Catalonia... and, internationaly, from Great Britain, Germany...

The statistics of the tourists in Mérida are: since 2001 to 2003 the number of tourist decreased, but since 2005 to 2007 the number increased in very sharp way.

I recommend you visiting my hometown because you won´t forget it! :)

ABOUT ME

HELLO! My name is Dulce, I am 20 years old.
I´m studing Tourism in the department of Bussiness and Tourism in Cáceres.
This is my third year, but I really like it. I have learnt so much about the tourism in Extremadura and Spain. Therefore, I love travelling to all places and to know the culture, gastronomy, language...of these places.
Next year, I will go to Scotland for 9 months to improve my knowledge of English. I´m eager to go there!!
When I finish my university course, I would like to create a travel agency in my town or in somewhere near it. But I don´t mind working in a hotel as a receptionist.
I hope you enjoy my new blog!!
